Este Vato at The Tiniest Bar in Texas

Rock y Roll Radio likes to promote up and coming bands that you'll be hearing about. Here is one band that you have to check out.

Este Vato, a new, up and coming Austin, Texas band, plays at the Tiniest Bar in Texas on Friday, June 5, 2009. How does Rock y Roll Radio know that Este Vato is up and coming, because they were one of the featured bands at the Remezcla.com En Tu Cuidad Tour in March. The other featured bands were Pinata Protest, Peligrosa All-Stars and Girl In A Coma. Este Vato's street rep and draw power put this Cumbia Rock and Latin Fusion band on the Austin scene.

Este Vato has been working on a new CD and is being finalized at this time. As soon as the CD is available, Rock y Roll Radio will let the listening public know all the details.

Make it a point to check Este Vato out for yourself. Don't just take Rock y Roll Radio's word for it.

Latin Music Month Finale Radio Edition

This weekend is the end of Latin Music Month here in Austin, Texas. There has been an abundance of Latin music, activites and shows throughout the city. The last BIG event for the month though is the Pachanga Music Festival. You'll have 19 Bands and 3 stages plus children's activites, a fun time for every member of the family.

Rock y Roll Radio will spend the entire day at the festival and take in as many bands as possible. In our month of May playlists, we tried to include as many of the bands playing the festival and during Latin Music Month. We hope the playlists gave you an idea of the abundant local talent and the talented artist that come to Austin.

Rock y Roll Radio will take some time off for the next two weeks inorder to do some work on the website and just take a breather after a very busy month. We'll be back on June 13th with a new playlist and other features. We appreciate you taking the time to visit the site and for listening to the music.


This weeks radio edition starts with "El Matador" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. "El Matador" is always a favorite and gets the blood pumping.

The "Wild Card" is "Wanna Love You" by Akon and Tego Calderon. Someting a little out of the ordinary but with the Tego influence.

Also included in the playlist are two songs by Pinata Protest, "Puro Pedo Punk Rock" from San Antonio, Texas. They're a local favorite that is energetic, physical and unique in sound. Pinata Protest played for the recent Remezcla.com En Tu Cuidad Tour in March. On a side note, the lead singer, Alvaro Salas can be seen in the Girl In A Coma video, "The Cell."

May was a busy month and now the Summer season is here! Let's Pachanga!

Memorial Day Radio Edition

Maneja Beto, who will be performing at the Pachanga Music Festival after a long hiatus, is included in this edition. Rock y Roll Radio is anxious to see Maneja in action again.

The "Wild Card" for this edition is "Get Busy (Cumbia Remix)" by Sean Paul. The song by itself is good but with the Cumbia flavor it's even better.

Also included in the mix is The Pinker Tones. According to Ian Loves Music blog, The Pinker Tones will be in Austin, Texas soon. Check out the blog for info.

And last, is a Selena Cumbia Medley to finish the Memorial Day Radio Edition.

Memorial Day Edition

Memorial Day occurs on the last Monday of May each year in honor of U.S. military personnel who have died during military service.

Rock y Roll Radio would like to honor all U.S. military personnel, past and present, and thank them for their service to country. As we celebrate Memorial Day, please don't take the day for granted but remember that all the freedoms that we enjoy were the result of someone's sacrifice.

On a lighter note

On the Pachanga Music Festival Edition, one of the bands that was purposely left out was Maneja Beto. "Maneja Beto is a rare blend between traditional Mexican cumbia and indie rock."

"For those not familiar with Maneja Beto, let me break it down for you. Their sound is unique. When I mentioned cumbia and indie rock coming together through them earlier, I was merely scratching the surface. They sing in Spanish but sound nothing like any other band you've heard, local or mainstream. They blend the keyboards and feedback with guitars. They merge two voices, Bobby Garza and Alex Chavez, with musical harmonies not yet touched by most Latin Alternative bands. Melodic is another word that comes to mind when I listen to their music. You really do have to listen for yourself."

"Are they energetic and exciting live? Honestly, no. Are they fantastic musicians? Yes. Are they original and creative? Yes. When you go to a Maneja concert, you won't find the large crowds (yet) or a mosh pit. You'll see an older mid to late twenty's and up crowd dancing to the cumbias and nodding their heads to the indie songs."

Maneja Beto has been on extended hiatus as lead singer, Alex Chavez, moved to Mexico to finalize research for his dissertation. They are re-uniting for this event and Rock y Roll Radio hopes that this is not a one time appearance but the first of many. Their absence has really created a void in the Austin Latin music scene because there is no other band that comes close to combining Mexican cumbia and especially indie rock as skillfully or effortlessly as Maneja Beto.

Panchanga Music Festival is the only event that you will see Maneja Beto at this time. Don't miss the opportunity or the experience.

Happy Birthday, TACVBOS!

Twenty years ago, four design students at Mexico's National Autonomous University decided to pick up guitars and synthesizers and form a band. They called themselves "Alicia Ya No Vive Aqui" in honor of Martin Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." But unlike the other rock en Español acts, the quartet wanted to incorporate Mexican and Afro-Caribbean rhythms into their sonic mix. And so, in honor of one of Mexico City's most famous restaurants, they changed the name to Café Tacuba (now spelled Tacvba). Little did they realize that they would become one of rock en Español's most acclaimed bands, collaborating with the likes of David Byrne and the Kronos Quartet. Brownout: Austin-Based Latin-Funk Band

Brownout, Austin, Texas based Latin-funk band, is one of the top performing bands at Panchanga Music Festival on May 30, 2009 at Fiesta Gardens. Romeo and Juliet: Shakespeare with a Latin Flair

Austin Shakespeare brings FREE Shakespeare to the Sheffield Hillside Theater at Zilker Park.

"Shakespeare’s most popular play with a new twist: Romeo & Juliet features Shakespeare’s own text, including some Spanish language! Set in Central Texas in 1940’s, this production boasts a Central Texas setting with a Mexican-American flavor. This is the timeless story of two young people who fall in love, but whose families have hated one another for so long that they no longer remember the reason."

If you've never been to one of Austin Shakespeare's production, it's an event for all the family or that special someone. Bring your blanket or chairs and enjoy the evening air and stars.

Mother's Day Special Edition

Happy Mother's Day from Rock y Roll Radio.

We've added 19 new songs to the playlist that are especially dedicated to all our Mothers on this planet. We do not appreciate you enough and these songs are just a small token of thanks. Rock y Roll Radio hopes that on Sunday, you can take a little time from your busy schedule to enjoy our selection.

I've added two "Willd Card" songs to the current playlist. The first Wild Card is James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's World" and Fatboy Slim's "Ya Mama."

The last song on the Mother's Day Edition is "The Old Songs Medley" by Tierra. I added this particular medley because Moms come in all ages and if you remember Tierra, you're really special.
