Angel Ferror, no stranger to Austin's music scene, has put together a group of talented musicians to form The Daylight Sessions. Angel Ferrer has a rich musical history and in Austin, Texas that history includes the groups Ill Camino, Vallejo, The Chris Perez New Project and now The Daylight Sessions. When Rock y Roll Radio researched Angel to find out more about him, other than the bands he was part of, there wasn't really any good comprehensive information. Again Austin Vida, Austin's premier and comprehensive music web source, has provided an exclusive and very intimate interview with Angel Ferrer. After reading the interview, I can say that I now know Angel Ferrer more thoroughly and also know his musical goals. I encourage you to read the interview because you'll be hearing a lot of buzz about Angel in the very near future.
I went to see Angel Ferrer's The Daylight Sessions last night at Quinn's in Round Rock, Texas. I really didn't know what to expect because I had purposely not listened to any of the group's music. To my amazement, I was blown away by the very soulful and sensual R&B sound that the band was producing. The band was solid and played as one soulful unit, just flawless. The Daylight Sessions is comprised of: Angel Ferrer-Guitar and Vocals; Alberto Ferrer-Bass; Jeff Hartsought-Drums; Robert Belt-Guitar and Cristina Soto-Back up Vocals. Angel Ferrer and Jeff Hartsough are very approachable and friendly guys and love what they do.
The group performed "All I Want To Do," "Cool Touch," plus a souful version of "Summer Breeze" a 1972 song by Seals and Crofts and other rock based songs.

I've either mentioned or written about Charanga Cakewalk on several occassions in this blog. Charanga Cakewalk is an Austin, Texas based band and combines Mexican Cubia, Latin beat and mellow lounge music that makes you want to dance. Rock y Roll Radio ranks Charanga Cakewalk as one of the best bands in Austin, Texas and dare say the universe.

60 Tigres ( pronounced "sesenta tigres") from Moterrey, Mexico has released a new video from their second album, Garage (free download.) It's been one year since Rock y Roll Radiosaw 60 Tigres. They were one of the finalist in the 2008 Sound & The Jury battle of the bands contest. The competition was fierce and all the talent was exceptional. The bands were hungry and were giving it their best effort. They all wanted that one available spot at the world renown Austin City Limit Festival (ACL) in Austin, Texas.
"As part of the Austin City Limits Festival, each year the organizers hold a virtual battle of the bands contest called Sound & The Jury. The grand prize includes a slot playing at ACL, among many other incredible benefits.
"Anybody can enter, with the first rounds of competition being determined by internet votes. After voting closes, the finalists are chosen by a panel of judges. The finalists then move on to compete at a showcase at Antone’s, where audience vote and an industry panel ultimately decide the winner."
60 Tigres played "Dentro de mi Cuerpo," "El Arma Secreto" and "El Yate del Amor" which incoporates Funk, Psychedelic, Latin and Punk sung in English and Spanish. Unfortunately, 60 Tigres did not win the contest but all the Latinos that voted for 60 Tigres and those that were present at Antone's that night all felt that 60 Tigres had already won because they were the only Latin band representing "la raza" that night. We were all proud and still remain proud of 60 Tigres and their success.

Rock y Roll Radio has attended the International Accordion Festival in the past years and it's an event that every one, regardless of age or musical taste, will enjoy. The accordion is a very versatile instrument that has transitioned into all music genres. You'll experience accordion music from all over the world and sounds that you never knew existed. The word "accordion" will no longer be associated with polkas or if you're from Texas, with conjunto or cantina music. You'll have a new respect for the instrument, the artist and their musical ability.
Mingo Saldivar y los Quatro Espadas, one of Rock y Roll Radio's all time favorite Master Accordionist is one of the performers at the festival. Mingo Saldivar "The Dancing Cowboy" is an exceptional musician and performer and you don't want him to stop playing his unique conjunto stlye music. Every time I've seen Mingo perform, a Lone Star Beer miraculously appears in my hand. I guess Mingo and Lone Star just go together.

Piñata Protest, from San Antonio and an Austin, Texas favorite Punk band, will also participate in the festival. You can see them perform at 12:00 PM and at 3:30 PM in the "Accordions Are Punk" workshop on Saturday, October 10. This workshop is an excellent fit for Piñata Protest because they are "punk rock with accordion, with norteño and conjunto influences." Rock y Roll Radio has written several blogs with Piñata Protest as a focus and can be found in the archives.

Los Hollywood, the Latin pop and rock band from San Diego, California, needs your vote to win the I Want My Music on MTV competition. There are four bands, on the verge of making it big, in the competition and the winner is determined by the fan vote. The winner gets their music video aired on MTV and also goes to themtvU Woodie Awards. The Woodie Awards,"the definitive college music award show," are determined by nominations from Indie music fans and ultimately by their vote.
Rock y Roll Radio, internet radio, strongly supports Los Hollywood. They are very approachable, well grounded and passionate about their music. I'm sure the three other bands are great as well but, Rock y Roll Radio has seen Los Hollywood perform and is very familiar with their accomplishments and music. Good luck to all the bands in the competition.
Bombasta, one of Rock y Roll Radio's favorite bands, is playing Saturday, September 12th in the Main Plaza in Downtown San Antonio, Texas from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. The Main Plaza is an excellent location for music. There is a wide open plaza in front of San Fernando Cathedral with ample space for lawn chairs and ample space for dancing. Rock y Roll Radio traveled to this plaza back in March and saw Grupo Fantasma perform. Of course, Grupo Fantasma had the large crowd on their feet, clapping and dancing their hearts away. This is also an excellent Free family event with the evening sun is low and the atmosphere is amazing.
Rock y Roll Radio has published a few blogs with video on Bambasta because they're that good plus these guys are everywhere. They've become an Austin favorite as much as they're a San Antonio favorite. Their music is a fusion of Cumbia, Reggae, Funk and Latin with a dash of "Sabor."
Check Bombasta out, there are ample opportunities in Austin, San Antonio and surrounding cities.

Part One will only introduce you to Maneja Beto's music. It will give you a sense of their sound, unique talent, songs and leave you saying "Wow, who are these guys. I need to know more."
Maneja Beto is an extremely popular Austin, Texas band. Their music is not easy to describe because it has elements of Mexican Cumbia, pop, rock, folk, "indie-en-Español" and some fusion, all blended into a mellow, upbeat, lounge and Latin sound. That is all that will be said about Maneja Beto.

First, let's define "Nortec." Nortec is a form of music which combines Mexican Norteño music and Techno music. Norteño is a style of music concentrated in Northern Mexico along the Mexican/US border and Techno is a style of music using technology to make music or fuse music with electronic beats or sounds. Nortec music was created by the DJ's in the border discos and bars.
Second, the who. Nortec Collective is group of DJ's who create Nortec music. This collective is an extremely musically creative and technologically savvy group of artist. The collective consist of: Bostich-Ramon Amezcua; Clorofila-Jorge Verdin; Fussible-Pepe Moght and Hiperboreal-PG Beas.
Rock y Roll Radio saw Nortec Collective featuring Bostich and Fussible at the 2008 Pachanga Latino Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Bostich and Fussible had the crowd in a mad frenzy. The music, the beat, the visual cinematic show and the musicians playing the accordian, clarinet and trumpet created an incredable show and atmosphere. The crowd was dancing, jumping up and down to the beat, screaming and shouting in euphoria. Although the Hogg Auditorium is a more refined venue than an open park, expect the same reaction as the music festival crowd. Wow!

Rock y Roll Radio had heard some buzz about La Guerrilla, a local Austin, Texas band. So when they were scheduled to play at theMohawk, Rock y Roll Radio made it a point to be there.
La Guerrilla consist of eight members: Enrique Rumiche-songwriter, vocalist and guitar; Liza McCown-violinist and vocalist; Marc Sustaita-trumpet; Nathaniel Natal-bass and accordion; Joseph Loney-percussionist; Nick Warrenchuck-trombone; Efrain-Latin percussion; and Grayson Legere-live support. The band plays a combination of rock, ska, idie with a definite Latin flavor. One of the aspects that also gives the band a distinct sound is the inclusion of the violin. Their energy and stage presence gets the audience involved and dancing. After they finished their set, the audience wanted more, "otra!" A couple of the songs that made an impression on the crowd that night were "Tabla Surfer" and "El Matador."
La Guerrilla is a relatively new band and strongly recommend you catch a performance because they will go far. At present, they are working on a CD which should be out in October. Looking forward to seeing them again soon. Check their La Guerrilla MySpace page of show dates.
American Latino Syndication has announced that Daisy Fuentes will be hosting and co-executive producing "American Latino TV" this coming Fall 2009. American Latino TV is an English-language TV show targeted to US-born Latinos and seen in over 100 cities, reaching over 92% of Hispanic TV homes. This reach makes American Latino TV second only to Univision for distribution of Hispanic-targeted TV programing.
"In a typical episode of American Latino TV, you'll see interviews with Latin celebrities, musical artists, features on cultura, fashion, barrios and, most importantly, everyday American Latinos doing extraordinary and inspirational things! We tell stories that need to be heard, that must be heard!"

Este Vato combines Cumbia Rock, Latin and Fusion with a beat that you can't help but dance to. They are also working on finalizing their new CD.
El Tule is a well established Austin favorite with performances at Pachanga Latino Music Festival in 2009, Jovita's and more recently repeat performances at Live Music@Central Market. El Tule plays a combination of Salsa, Latin and Cumbia music which you can definitely dance to or just sit back and enjoy. El Tule is also working on their second CD, "Pa Bailar". Guitar Girl is the name of a business/school, founded by Mandy Rowden, which specializes in providing guitar lessons and songwriting instruction to women. The students then have the opportunity to perform at various venues under Guitar Girl. I'm sorry to say that I don't know much about Guitar Girl and hope this small paragraph does them justice but I really like the concept.
