Top 10 Most Popular Songs in Some Latin American Countries

While on Twitter, I came across a tweet. The tweet had a link to the KGO-TV website which opened a page titled "Las 10 canciones mas populares." The AP Associate Press article date May 26, 2009 "La 10 canciones más populares de la semana en algunos paises en las americas" listed the 10 most popular songs for the week in some Latin American countries.

I found the list very interesting. To some extent you would assume that all the popular songs would be in Spanish although songs by The Jonas Brothers, Jason Mraz, Miley Cyrus, Simply Red and Earth, Wind & Fire were present in the lists. With the availability of cable televison, music videos, movies, social media, the web and other outlets, you can see why American and English songs would be very popular in other countries. Also just like Rock y Roll Radio, they are looking for new, fresh music and artist, the next big thing regardless of the language.

AustinVida's M.I.S. Exclusive Interview and Performance

AustinVida in cooperation with Blastro obtained an exclusive and exceptional interview and live performance of M.I.S. (Mexican Institute of Sound) at the Panchanga Music Festival recently. This feature provides not only performance footage but an interview with Camilo Lara which discusses equipment and the roots and experiences behind some of his music. The video is 16:14 minutes long, which I originally thought was kind of long, but time passes by pretty fast because the content is so interesting and unique. Ajay Miranda also of Nite's did exceptional work on the video but I was more impressed by the candid conversation and the especial focus on the electronic equipment. Thanks for not making this video interview just another lack lust video on the web.

Father's Day Radio Edition

Father's Day is a very special day. It is the day honoring all fathers and is typically celebrated by giving Dad gifts, fixing his favorite foods and other activities that bring family together. For Latino fathers, of Mexican descent, Sunday mornings typically mean tacos de barbacoba, a hot cup of coffee and pan dulce. Today the familia is gathered around Dad catering to his whims in order to please him on his special day. Later that afternoon, Dad will grill carnitas, chicken, sausage and helotes for all the family, including abuelo, abuelita, tios, tias and extended family. Along with food and family, special gatherings are never complete without "la musica." Music to sing to, to dance to and to cry to, as well as bring joy.

This Father's Day Radio Edition includes some unique songs. Some of these songs help convey the feelings and beliefs that Latino fathers hold true. These feelings and beliefs are many times instilled by culture, family and believe it or not, music. For example:

"El Rey" by Vincente Fernandez

Every Hispanic male, especially of Mexican descent, inherits the birth right of being El Rey. Now this birth right is something that the male carries with him throughout life but it is a right that has to be maintain because it can be lost or taken away.

"Reyna De Mi Amor" by Sunny Ozuna and the Sunliners

Every Rey has a Reyna. This Reyna De Mi Amor has to be taken care of because she is the one that can and will take the title of El Rey away.

"La Familia" by Kid Frost

Familia is very important to El Rey. Familia are his royal subjects. These royal subjects are what gives him the title and status of El Rey and they too can take awake the status.

"Low Rider Oldies " by Lowrider Oldies-GQ

Most, if not all, of Los Reyes like their cars. This car may not be a Lowrider but a car that is his pride and joy. The car gets a weekly wash and polish and El Rey is very particular who he lets in the car. This car is also for crusing the boulevard with his tunes.

"All the Young Dudes" by Alejandro Escovedo

Although the lyrics may convey a different messege, this song was chosen because Fathers sometimes feel like they are getting old and they're no longer a "Young Dude."

Wild Cards:

"Land of 1000 Dances" by Cannibal & The Headhunters

Old school song. Cannibal & The Headhunters have a very interesting story. Still a cool song.

"Calling" by Raphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq use to be part of thr group Tony!Toni!Toné!. Raphael recently put out an album, "The Way I See It," which is reminiscent of 60's Motown artist and music. It's an excellent blues/soul album and "Calling" caught my interest when Raphael starting singing in Spanish. I liked it so I thought I'd add it to the playlist.

"Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by the Temptations

Not all Dad's are El Rey. Some are absent Dads or part-time Dads. "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is directed to those Dads.

Hope you enjoy Father's Day and the music especially selected for this special day.

June's "Summer In The City" Radio Edition

Rock y Roll Radio decided to take a two week break after the busy Latin Music Month. Well, right after Pachanga Music Festival on Saturday, May 30, 2009, Rock y Roll Radio was at the OZOMATLI Solar Power Concert Series presented by Blue Dog Rescue on Wednesday, June 3 in Republic Square Park in Austin, Texas. "What a short Break!"

OZO always puts on an excellent show and without fail incorporates the audience into the show and music. The audience sings along and OZO always leaves you wanting more. The weather was great, a breezy evening under a clear sky and a great crowd. Thanks go to Pelegrosa All Stars for doing and excellent job of entertaining us before OZO performed. And the best part of it all was that this concert was FREE. When is the last time you saw OZO for FREE?

This week's playlist has three songs that OZOMATLI performed:
1. "The City of Angels"
2. "Cumbia de los Muertos"
3. "After Party"

Then on Saturday, June 6, Rock y Roll Radio was at Zilker Park for Austin Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. If you read my "Romeo & Juliet: Shakespeare with a Latino Flare" blog, this Romeo and Juliet had a different flavor to it.

The play was very entertaining and fun. The acting was excellent but when you've seen Romeo and Juliet performed in the traditional sense, you have to change your mind set to appreciate this version. The performance is set at the base of a hillside with the audience laying, sitting or lounging on the hillside. You take your blanket or lawn chair along with some food and beverages and enjoy yourself or with guest. Again, the weather was great, a warm breezy evening under a full moon along with a very social audience. Parking was available and ample. And just like the OZO concert, this play was FREE as well. Who can't afford that?

This week's playlist is a good mix of songs. Rock y Roll Radio's favorite song this week is "Cumbia En Do Menor" by Ska Cubano. It just has a good beat, rythme, and is contagious. Check it out.

The **Wild Card** is "Santaria" by Sublime. Just thought it was an interesting song.

Enjoy the "Summer in the City" Radio Edition. Rock y Roll Radio will have a Father's Day Edition next week.
