Latin Metal is a category of music that does not really get any air play in main stream television or radio. If you are into Metal, you really have to seek it out, go underground or obviously, go to the web. Yes, MTV and VH1 may air some Metal shows but they're usually a watered down, "clean", "glam" version of metal and with no Latin Metal represented. Rock y Roll Radio is dedicated to playing all types of Latin and Latin Alternative music and Metal falls under this broad category. I know Metal does not fit everybody's taste but Rock y Roll Radio does not want to be like the main stream media, Rock y Roll Radio wants to give you a reason to visit and listen to rockyrollradio.com. Hope you like this edition or at least makes you aware that there are Latin Metal groups out there.
Listed below are the groups and links on this edition's playlist:
1. Soulfly - Phoenix, Arizona
2. Brujeria - Los Angeles, CA and Mexico
3. Ankla - Los Angeles, CA
4. Sepultura - Sao Paulo, Brazil
5. Asesino - Los Angeles, CA
6. Ill Nino - New Jersery

Charanga Cakewalk and Patricia Vonne Perform
Charanga Cakewalk and Patricia Vonne will perform at the Continental Club on Friday, July 24, 2009. Both are Austin's favorite local performers and the Continental is Austin's favorite club.
If you're familiar with Charanga Cakewalk and Patricia Vonne, then I really don't have to say any more.
If you're not familiar with either one let me tell you about them.
Charanga Cakewalk is lead by Michael Ramos, and recently added Brian Ramos of Kanko, a local Austin band. Both individuals, along with the band members, make exceptional music. If you're from the area, you can describe their sound as a combination of Mexican Cumbia, Mexican Folk, Lounge music. I provided a video below to give you a better sense of the Charange Cakewalk "experience." Rock y Roll Radio has seen Charanga Cakewalk numerous times, recently at both Pachanga Latino Music Festivals, 2008 and 2009, and at the One World Theater, as the opening act for Bajofondo. Once you get the Charanga fever, you can't shake it off. You'll know you have the fever when your feet involuntarily start to dance and your body starts to sway at the sound of Charanga Calkwalk music.
I'm not the only fan of Charanga Cakewalk. The other day I was catching up on LatinoUSA podcasts on my iPod and Maria Hinojosa stated that she had Michael Ramos on her iPod while traveling in Chile. I thought to myself, Maria has excellent taste.
La Negra Celina
Patricia Vonne is also an exceptional singer and musician. She sings both in English and Spanish and mixes Tex-Mex, rock-a-billy and Flamenco into songs with a story. Her voice is sultry and mesmerizing at the same time. I'm sorry to say I haven't seen Patricia as often as I would like to but when I do catch her show it certainly is a treat. I've also provided a video so that you can get a sense of Patricia Vonne's music and style.
Patricia Vonne
If you can make it to the Continental on Friday, please do, you won't be disappointed.

Ocote Soul Sound and Adrian Quesada's new release "Coconut Rock" is available now under ESL Music. Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma and Martin Perna of Antibalas, their third album together, produce more of their trademark psychedelic afro-latin groove .
Rock y Roll Radio saw Ocote Soul Sound at the Pachanga Music Festival recently and strongly recommends that you get a hold of "Coconut Rock" and let the groove take you on a journey. And don't forget to get "Sonido Gold" as well.

Monte Negro is releasing a new EP, "Fugitives of Pleasure/Pasejeros" EP, with an official release date of July 28, 2009. Monte Negro is an exceptional band from California, which mixes Latin, punk and rock in Spanish and English, with a sound of it's own. Their last album "Cicatrix" released in 2008 was a huge success and Monte Negro also toured to promote that album as well. Rock y Roll Radio looks forward to seeing Monte Negro come back to Austin again. You can see Monte Negro perform on August 5, 2009 at La Rumba Disco, Austin, Texas.

Bombasta Plays American Sabor & Flamingo Cantina
One of Rock y Roll Radio's favorite bands, Bombasta, will play at the Museo Alemeda American Sabor Music Fest on July 25, 2009 in San Antonio's Historic Market Square. Rock y Roll Radio traveled to San Antonio on June 20th to check out the Music Fest and really had a great time. I got to see Austin's Brownout play at one of the stages. Brownout always puts on a great musical show and always gets people to move or dance. If you haven't been to San Antonio's Market Square, you have to make it a point to visit the Square. There are resturants and food booths, small shops that sell all varieties of Mexican curios and articles in air conditioned facilities or just sit in the Square and enjoy the ambiance. And don't forget to vist the Museo Alemeda "American Sabor" exhibit.
"American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music" is the first interpretive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music. The exhibition focuses on five major centers of Latino popular music production in the post-World War II United States-New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Antonio and San Francisco-which represent the diversity of Latino music.
The Music Fest is Free. There are 12 acts and three stages. Hours are 2:00-11:00 PM. Parking is available around the Market Square for a nominal fee. Parking across the Square was $5.00, which is average price. Although the weather was warm, there is ample shady spots to sit and cool off.
If you can't go to San Antonio for American Sabor on July 25th, catch Bombasta on August 8th at the Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas.
To get a sense of Bombasta's music and sound, click on video below.

Fourth of July Radio Edition
Fourth of July, is the day commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Today, Americans celebrate by having picnics, barbecues, parades, fireworks and of course, music.
The first song is "This Land is Your Land" by Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings out of Brooklyn, New York. This band has become an Austin, Texas favorite and when you listen to the song, they'll become your favorite as well. They ooze a soul, mellow blues, funk sound and beat.
Next, the Fourth of July Radio Edition starts out with some songs "to get the party started." Songs by Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, DJ Laz, Nore and other featured guest will put you in the mood for dancing.
Also in the playlist is "96 Tears" by Question Mark and The Mysterians, a 1960's band formed in Saginaw, Michigan. "96 Tears" was the top selling record in America in October 1966. This band has a very interesting history, check it out.
Then the playlist changes to a various mix of songs ending with Los Amigos Invisibles.
Rock y Roll Radio hopes that you have the opportunity to celebrate Fouth of July with friends and family. If you have to work on this holiday, Rock y Roll Radio thanks you for your service and hopes you can celebrate on another day.
Go to Rock y Roll Radio to hear Fourth of July Radio Edition.
