Bombasta: Raza En La Plaza in San Antonio, Texas Septembe 12, 2009

Bombasta, one of Rock y Roll Radio's favorite bands, is playing Saturday, September 12th in the Main Plaza in Downtown San Antonio, Texas from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. The Main Plaza is an excellent location for music. There is a wide open plaza in front of San Fernando Cathedral with ample space for lawn chairs and ample space for dancing. Rock y Roll Radio traveled to this plaza back in March and saw Grupo Fantasma perform. Of course, Grupo Fantasma had the large crowd on their feet, clapping and dancing their hearts away. This is also an excellent Free family event with the evening sun is low and the atmosphere is amazing.

Rock y Roll Radio has published a few blogs with video on Bambasta because they're that good plus these guys are everywhere. They've become an Austin favorite as much as they're a San Antonio favorite. Their music is a fusion of Cumbia, Reggae, Funk and Latin with a dash of "Sabor."

Check Bombasta out, there are ample opportunities in Austin, San Antonio and surrounding cities.

Rock y Roll Radio, Internet Radio, has Bombasta on the "Summer In The City (Two)" Radio Edition, song #21.

Maneja Beto: The Best Latin Band You Don't Know About (Part One)

Part One will only introduce you to Maneja Beto's music. It will give you a sense of their sound, unique talent, songs and leave you saying "Wow, who are these guys. I need to know more."

Maneja Beto is an extremely popular Austin, Texas band. Their music is not easy to describe because it has elements of Mexican Cumbia, pop, rock, folk, "indie-en-Español" and some fusion, all blended into a mellow, upbeat, lounge and Latin sound. That is all that will be said about Maneja Beto.

View both videos and you'll see what I mean.

Part Two will be a more in depth piece which will provide insight into the Maneja Beto band members, influences and history.

Rock y Roll Radio played Maneja Beto's "Campanera" (#130) for the Memorial Day Radio Edition back in May. Check it out as well.

Kalua: A Band With A Vision

First, let me state, " I like Kalua."

Kalua is a band of four young, charismatic, Latin men from Austin, Texas. They are Juan Diaz, (Mexico) vocals and guitar; Andres Junca, (Columbia) guitar; Andres Delgado, (Venezuela) drums and Andres Acevedo, (Columbia) bass. Their sound combines rock, reggae, punk and Latin, sung mainly in Spanish.

They formed in 2007 with a purpose and a vision. They weren't just going to be a band, they were going to be a "premier band in contemporary Latin music worldwide." They wrote original material, went to the studio, worked hard and the end result was the "La Novedad" CD.

You would think the hard work was over, but not for Kalua. The next step was get the CD and their music out in front of the public. These guys were everywhere. They were at both Pachanga Latino Music Festivals, two time winners of Burger King's "Tu Ciudad, Tu Musica" contest, numerous TV appearances, radio interviews and print and media reviews. What impressed me about Kalua was that they were executing their plan and maximizing band exposure and recognition in each appearance, interview and performance. Even after two years as a band, Kalua is still focused on their vision. They put out their second music video, touring and Rock y Roll Radio subscribes to their e-mail bulletins. (Do you subscribe?)

Second, the women love Kalua. I've seen Kalua perform at several Austin venues and they always attract a lot of women to their performances. These women are in all age groups and they are all dancing. You can tell they are really into the music and enjoying themselves. It's great to watch them.

Kalua is the model for success. They have the music, talent and drive.

To get a better sense of Kalua, listen to the song "La Novedad" on Kalua's website and check out their video below. Also, check out Kalua's MySpace page for show dates.

Latin Music USA on PBS

"Latin Music USA is a four part documentary series of American music. Fusion of Latin sounds with jazz, rock, country, rhythm and blues - music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize. It's a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across five decades and across musical genres to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all."

"The four hour documentary series premieres on October 12th (Episodes 1&2) and October 19th (Episodes 3&4) 2009, on PBS stations nationwide and on PBS.org/latinmusicusa." The series was produced by WGHB in co-production with BBC.

Episode One: "Traces the rise of Latin jazz and the explosion of the mambo and cha cha chá...Latin Music infiltrates R&B and rock and roll through the 1960's."

Episode Two: "Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in New York reinvent the Cuban son and the Puerto Rican plena, adding elements from soul and jazz to create salsa."

Episode Three: "Mexican-Americans in CA, TX and across the Southwest create their own distinct musical voices...Their music would play an important role in the struggle for Chicano civil rights."

Episode Four: "Focuses on the Latin pop explosion of the turn of the century and the success of artist like Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Shakira in the English-language market. As studios concentrate on star-driven pop, Latino youth gravitate toward urban fusions - Spanish rap and reggaetón, as well as rock en Español."

Rock y Roll Radio will definitely will be watching this documentary. Check your local listings for specific show times in your area.

Rock y Roll Radio looks forward to seeing Monte Negro come back to Austin again. You can see Monte Negro perform on August 5, 2009 at La Rumba Disco, Austin, Texas.
