60 Tigres: New Video "Garage"

60 Tigres ( pronounced "sesenta tigres") from Moterrey, Mexico has released a new video from their second album, Garage (free download.) It's been one year since Rock y Roll Radio saw 60 Tigres. They were one of the finalist in the 2008 Sound & The Jury battle of the bands contest. The competition was fierce and all the talent was exceptional. The bands were hungry and were giving it their best effort. They all wanted that one available spot at the world renown Austin City Limit Festival (ACL) in Austin, Texas.

"As part of the Austin City Limits Festival, each year the organizers hold a virtual battle of the bands contest called Sound & The Jury. The grand prize includes a slot playing at ACL, among many other incredible benefits.

"Anybody can enter, with the first rounds of competition being determined by internet votes. After voting closes, the finalists are chosen by a panel of judges. The finalists then move on to compete at a showcase at Antone’s, where audience vote and an industry panel ultimately decide the winner."

60 Tigres played "Dentro de mi Cuerpo," "El Arma Secreto" and "El Yate del Amor" which incoporates Funk, Psychedelic, Latin and Punk sung in English and Spanish. Unfortunately, 60 Tigres did not win the contest but all the Latinos that voted for 60 Tigres and those that were present at Antone's that night all felt that 60 Tigres had already won because they were the only Latin band representing "la raza" that night. We were all proud and still remain proud of 60 Tigres and their success.

Enjoy 60 Tigres' video and download the album, free download Garage.

Rock y Roll Radio, internet radio, has 60 Tigres, "Dentro de mi Cuerpo,"#186 on our playlist.

International Accordion Festival San Antonio, Texas October 9-11, 2009

International Accordion Festival in La Villita, San Antonio, Texas on October 9-11, 2009

"Held every year in the beautiful downtown riverwalk area on the historic grounds of La Villita (3 blocks south of the Alamo on South Alamo Street), the International Accordion Festival features performances, workshops, open mike sessions and accordion jams.

On three stages, enjoy ensembles from around the globe playing everything from Panamanian pindin to Parisian musette, to Balkan to Basque, from Czech polka to Creole zydeco, from Americana to Acadiana and much, much more. In our workshop area, find informal sessions and performances featuring up-close and personal interaction with master artist and their music.

It's big, it's outdoors, it's two days. It's dancing and fun for the whole family. The festival boasts ethnic foods, beverage and merchandise booths throughout the weekend. Best of all, Saturday and Sunday admission is Free."

Rock y Roll Radio has attended the International Accordion Festival in the past years and it's an event that every one, regardless of age or musical taste, will enjoy. The accordion is a very versatile instrument that has transitioned into all music genres. You'll experience accordion music from all over the world and sounds that you never knew existed. The word "accordion" will no longer be associated with polkas or if you're from Texas, with conjunto or cantina music. You'll have a new respect for the instrument, the artist and their musical ability.

Mingo Saldivar y los Quatro Espadas, one of Rock y Roll Radio's all time favorite Master Accordionist is one of the performers at the festival. Mingo Saldivar "The Dancing Cowboy" is an exceptional musician and performer and you don't want him to stop playing his unique conjunto stlye music. Every time I've seen Mingo perform, a Lone Star Beer miraculously appears in my hand. I guess Mingo and Lone Star just go together.

As a treat, I've provided a video of Mingo doing a Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire" in Spanish.

Piñata Protest, from San Antonio and an Austin, Texas favorite Punk band, will also participate in the festival. You can see them perform at 12:00 PM and at 3:30 PM in the "Accordions Are Punk" workshop on Saturday, October 10. This workshop is an excellent fit for Piñata Protest because they are "punk rock with accordion, with norteño and conjunto influences." Rock y Roll Radio has written several blogs with Piñata Protest as a focus and can be found in the archives.

Here are the festival schedules for Saturday and Sunday.

Los Hollywood Needs Your Vote! "I Want My Music on MTV"

"No te Aguites"- Los Hollywood

Los Hollywood, the Latin pop and rock band from San Diego, California, needs your vote to win the I Want My Music on MTV competition. There are four bands, on the verge of making it big, in the competition and the winner is determined by the fan vote. The winner gets their music video aired on MTV and also goes to the mtvU Woodie Awards. The Woodie Awards,"the definitive college music award show," are determined by nominations from Indie music fans and ultimately by their vote.

Rock y Roll Radio, internet radio, strongly supports Los Hollywood. They are very approachable, well grounded and passionate about their music. I'm sure the three other bands are great as well but, Rock y Roll Radio has seen Los Hollywood perform and is very familiar with their accomplishments and music. Good luck to all the bands in the competition.

Please vote for Los Hollywood at I Want My Music on MTV.

Rock y Roll Radio has Los Hollywood on the Rock y Roll Radio Relaunch Radio Edition, song # 197.

tel: 210.299.4300 fax: 210.299.4340
www.thealameda.org

In honor of the groundbreaking exhibition, American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, showing now through September 20, the Museo Alameda is hosting it's last of three all-day concert events.

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009

Times: 12:00-11:00 PM

Admission: Free

Location: Historic Market Square, San Antonio, Texas

Rock y Roll Radio attended the June 20th Sabor Music Fest and had a really great time. Got to see Brownout, who is releasing their new CD "Aguilas and Cobras" on September 15th, perform and enjoyed their Latin funk sound and the ambiance that is the Market Square.

This last event promises to be the biggest and the best of the series with several of Rock y Roll Radio's favorite bands performing.

The performing artist for the fest are:

Bombasta - A San Antonio and Austin, Texas favorite. Their Cumbia, Latin and Fusion beat will have you dancing in the street.

Pinata Protest - Also a San Antonio and Austin, Texas favorite. If you like Punk with a Mexican in your face flair, Pinata Protest is your band. Even if you don't like Punk, these guys will entertain you with their energy and charisma. "Puro Pinche Punk"

Girl In A Coma - Again a San Antonio, Austin, Texas and national favorite. Their music combines rock, rockabilly and punk with a dark and sober feel. Girl In A Coma's intriguing stage presence and music will mesmerize you into a euphoric "Coma."

Ernie Garibay and the Sleeping Cats - Ernie is a San Antonio icon and is a respected and admired music veteran. The Sleeping Cats play a combination of Old School rock and oldies with a blend of rhythm and blues. If Ernie is playing, you know it's a party.

Stefani Montiel - Is a San Antonio based Tejano Artist although she does also perform Latin, Salsa and R&B.

Grupo Fama - From Houston, Texas is a Regional Mexican and Spanish Pop band.

There's a lot of excellent and diverse music and you'll definitely find a band to suit your musical taste.

I strongly recommend that you attend this last and historic event because it may not happen again or anytime soon.

And, if you haven't been to San Antonio's Market Square, you have to make it a point to visit the Square. There are restaurants and food booths, small shops that sell all varieties of Mexican curios and articles in air conditioned facilities or you can just sit in the Square and enjoy the ambiance. And don't forget to visit the Museo Alameda "American Sabor" exhibit.

Rock y Roll Radio, Internet radio, has Bombasta, Pinata Protest and Girl In A Come on their play list. Check them out if you're not familiar with these fine bands.

Brownout CD Release Party at The Mohawk

CD release party for Brownout's new CD, "Aguilas and Cobras," at the Mohawk tonight. This second CD continues the success of "Homenaje" but with more "Hardcore Psychedelic Latin Funk," more rhythm and more beat. "Aguilas and Cobras" puts Brownout in a new category, from local/regional band to worldwide wonder. New fans and more musical industry interest will be garnered as a result of this CD. I hear the Grammys calling, Brownout, answer the call!

"Aguilas and Cobras" official release is September 15, 2009 on Six Degrees Records. Rock y Roll Radio, internet radio, had the privilege of listening to the CD and was blown away beginning with the intro of the first song and continued to the last note of the last track. Wow! "Aguilas and Cobras" is a must have album for you music library.

Bombasta: Raza En La Plaza in San Antonio, Texas Septembe 12, 2009

Bombasta, one of Rock y Roll Radio's favorite bands, is playing Saturday, September 12th in the Main Plaza in Downtown San Antonio, Texas from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. The Main Plaza is an excellent location for music. There is a wide open plaza in front of San Fernando Cathedral with ample space for lawn chairs and ample space for dancing. Rock y Roll Radio traveled to this plaza back in March and saw Grupo Fantasma perform. Of course, Grupo Fantasma had the large crowd on their feet, clapping and dancing their hearts away. This is also an excellent Free family event with the evening sun is low and the atmosphere is amazing.

Rock y Roll Radio has published a few blogs with video on Bambasta because they're that good plus these guys are everywhere. They've become an Austin favorite as much as they're a San Antonio favorite. Their music is a fusion of Cumbia, Reggae, Funk and Latin with a dash of "Sabor."

Check Bombasta out, there are ample opportunities in Austin, San Antonio and surrounding cities.

Rock y Roll Radio, Internet Radio, has Bombasta on the "Summer In The City (Two)" Radio Edition, song #21.

Maneja Beto: The Best Latin Band You Don't Know About (Part One)

Part One will only introduce you to Maneja Beto's music. It will give you a sense of their sound, unique talent, songs and leave you saying "Wow, who are these guys. I need to know more."

Maneja Beto is an extremely popular Austin, Texas band. Their music is not easy to describe because it has elements of Mexican Cumbia, pop, rock, folk, "indie-en-Español" and some fusion, all blended into a mellow, upbeat, lounge and Latin sound. That is all that will be said about Maneja Beto.

View both videos and you'll see what I mean.

Part Two will be a more in depth piece which will provide insight into the Maneja Beto band members, influences and history.

Rock y Roll Radio played Maneja Beto's "Campanera" (#130) for the Memorial Day Radio Edition back in May. Check it out as well.

Mexic-Arte Viva La Vida Fest October 24, 2009

Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas presents Viva La Vida Fest 2009 celebrating the 26th Annual Dia de los Muertos on October 24th, 2:00 to 10:00 PM.

"Mexic-Arte Museum, the Official Mexican and Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas, will be celebrating its 26th Annual Dias de los Muertos - Austin's largest and longest-running Day of the Dead festival featuring Latino artist and entertainment, an exhibition, and educational programs in the heart of downtown. Part of the proceeds will benefit the education programs of Mexic-Arte Museum, whose mission is to enrich the community through education programs and exhibitions focusing on traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino and Latin American art and culture."

In order to appreciate this annual event, knowledge of "Dia de los Muertos" is important.

"Dias de los Muertos is an important Latin American tradition, taking place on November 2, when friends and family gather to honor and remember loved ones - not through mourning, but through celebration! The origins trace back to Pre-Columbian era, when death was viewed as a transformation. Death was not seen as a final end, but rather as a cycle or continuation of life. This ancient belief evolved to the modern tradition of creating altars to commemorate loved ones, decorated with sugar skulls, flowers, photographs, and favorite foods and memorabilia of the deceased. They share stories and memories, and they sing songs and play music."

Rock y Roll Radio is very familiar with Mexic-Arte's annual Dia de los Muertos. The favored event is the Procession. It starts at Plaza Saltillo in East Austin, down 6th Street and concludes at 5th and Congress. The procession consist of participants in costumes, music, props and floats. It's an amazing and a very festive site watching the procession arrive at the Mexic-Arte Museum. You'll also find exhibits of art and decorated alters, music, food booths, artist booth, workshops and a Dia de los Muertos Marketplace.

This event also provides opportunities to participate. You can submit your art or decorated altar for display, march in the procession or be an event volunteer. Click on Viva La Vida Fest 2009 to get more details and registration forms.

Nortec Collective featuring Bostich y Fussible Radio Edition

Nortec Collective featuring Bostish and Fussible is coming to the University of Texas at Austin Performing Arts Center (UTPAC), specifically Hogg Memorial Auditorium on September 25, 2009.

Who or what is Nortec Collective?

First, let's define "Nortec." Nortec is a form of music which combines Mexican Norteño music and Techno music. Rock y Roll Radio saw Nortec Collective featuring Bostich and Fussible at the 2008 Pachanga Latino Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Bostich and Fussible had the crowd in a mad frenzy. The music, the beat, the visual cinematic show and the musicians playing the accordian, clarinet and trumpet created an incredable show and atmosphere. The crowd was dancing, jumping up and down to the beat, screaming and shouting in euphoria. Although the Hogg Auditorium is a more refined venue than an open park, expect the same reaction as the music festival crowd. Wow!

Kalua: A Band With A Vision

First, let me state, " I like Kalua."

Kalua is a band of four young, charismatic, Latin men from Austin, Texas. They are Juan Diaz, (Mexico) vocals and guitar; Andres Junca, (Columbia) guitar; Andres Delgado, (Venezuela) drums and Andres Acevedo, (Columbia) bass. Their sound combines rock, reggae, punk and Latin, sung mainly in Spanish.

They formed in 2007 with a purpose and a vision. They weren't just going to be a band, they were going to be a "premier band in contemporary Latin music worldwide." They wrote original material, went to the studio, worked hard and the end result was the "La Novedad" CD.

You would think the hard work was over, but not for Kalua. The next step was get the CD and their music out in front of the public. These guys were everywhere. They were at both Pachanga Latino Music Festivals, two time winners of Burger King's "Tu Ciudad, Tu Musica" contest, numerous TV appearances, radio interviews and print and media reviews. What impressed me about Kalua was that they were executing their plan and maximizing band exposure and recognition in each appearance, interview and performance. Even after two years as a band, Kalua is still focused on their vision. They put out their second music video, touring and Rock y Roll Radio subscribes to their e-mail bulletins. (Do you subscribe?)

Second, the women love Kalua. I've seen Kalua perform at several Austin venues and they always attract a lot of women to their performances. These women are in all age groups and they are all dancing. You can tell they are really into the music and enjoying themselves. It's great to watch them.

Kalua is the model for success. They have the music, talent and drive.

To get a better sense of Kalua, listen to the song "La Novedad" on Kalua's website and check out their video below. Also, check out Kalua's MySpace page for show dates.
